Biography

Roll Deep are a grime super collective from Bow E3 and Limehouse E14, East London. Wiley set Roll Deep up while he was still in Pay As U Go, he'dmade the track 'Terrible' after his famous PAUG production 'Know We' but, because the new tune featured MCs outside of Pay As You Go, a new name was needed to put out the track. Roll Deep was the name that was decided after a suggestion by Flow Dan as they were a group who "roll deep" together. The two crews existed alongside each other until Pay As U Go completely disintegrated. The crew gradually got more recognition, both through new members and the emergence of Dizzee Rascal, who was ushered into the crew by Wiley.

The original members were Wiley, Scratchy, Danny Weed, Breeze, Flow Dan and a few others. At the time the membership was quite fluid, they were a group of people who rolled together so Flow Dan who was in Pay As U Go was also in the crew. Wiley brought in Dizzee Rascal and as Pay As U Go split Roll Deep got bigger. Target and Riko were still in the remains of Pay As U Go after the split and didn't become official members of the crew until the time of their first album In At The Deep End although prior to that they rolled with the crew as did Tinchy Stryder a lot as they all came from Bow E3 and Limehouse. Many members have come and gone but the original core members Wiley, Flow Dan, Breeze, Danny Weed and Scratchy still remain. Most of the early core members Wiley, Danny Weed, Flow Dan, Bubbles, Jet Le, Breeze plus Riko and Target have known each other since they were children.

They have had a huge influence on the scene with some of the most talented and successful artists to emerge from the Grime scene having come through their ranks. In recent years their early hype and status has diminished somewhat but they still have a lot to offer and rank alongside Ruff Sqwad as one of the Grime scene's best and longest lasting grime crews.

In November 2009 Roll Deep signed a new deal with Virgin Records/Relentless Records and they plan to release a single "Good Times" in 2010.

As of now it is unclear wheather Skepta, Little Dee, Killa P, Jet Le & DJ Maxinuim are still in roll deep beacuse they haven't done anything with roll deep for a while.

  • Trim - Joined the crew the year before In At The Deep End and left after a fall-out with Flow Dan consequently has released several mixtapes and now says he is the "real" Flow Dan and appears to have a constant chip on his shoulder about Flow Dan. (Join 2004 - Left 2007)
  • Dizzee Rascal - A very early (but not original) member he left after a fall-out with Wiley. (Join 2002 - Left 2004)

  • Wonder - a founding member who left after a fall-out with Wiley. Produced Dizzee's track Respect Me. (Join 2002 - Left 2003)
